Betty and Barney

I'm excited to present the Betty and Barney (I put her name first because feminism although she done a number on her husband which wasn't nice) Hill incident! Please enjoy and yell at me all you like.

I've spent a lot of time working on the Hill case, from my first published comments about Betty seeing Jupiter and Saturn back in 1976. I met the late Betty Hill several times, and let me tell you she was the polar opposite of what you would call "credible." I participated in the "Encounters at Indian Head" Conference in 2000, which I have written up: https://badufos.blogspot.com/2015/05/betty-hills-last-hurrah-secret-ufo.html This was actually held at the Indian Head Resort in New Hampshire, along the route of the Hills' Wild Ride.

By and large, I think you have the timeline correct. But let's talk about that "eighth stop," about two miles south of the Indian Head Resort. While at the conference, Betty Hill guided us along part of that route, from Indian Head to the supposed "capture site." I was riding in a car driven by the late Karl Pflock, the guy who discovered the apparent "borrowing" by Travis Walton from Heinlein's stories, and also was the first to suggest (correctly) that the five woodcutters in Mike Rogers' truck knew nothing about the little hoax awaiting them. However, Karl was a believer in the B&B story.

When we stopped at the "eighth stop," south of Indian Head, Karl explained to me that this was the point at which the UFO (allegedly) crossed over the road, in front of their car. It allegedly moved from the west to the east. Barney got out with his binoculars (and apparently also took his gun), crossed the road, and walked into the field. He looked at the UFO and supposedly saw aliens pulling levers. He decided they were "Nazis," and came running back into the car, and drove off.

Barney was looking east at this time. Canon Mountain was many miles to the north, and probably wasn't visible any more. So whatever he saw, it wasn't Jupiter, and it wasn't Canon Mountain, either. I suspect it was an airplane. By this time, both of them were in a terribly frightened state.

Thanks for your input, Robert. The forum post where I got the information about the drive is so old that the photos have become broken links. Jim Macdonald said the beacon is last visible 2.1 mi south of Indian Head, so either Betty took you further down the road than their location on the night, or they were indeed seeing something else at that point. Would be great to see photos of the beacon at the last point where it's visible, zoomed in like binoculars, perhaps with a dab of Vaseline on the lens to simulate bleary eyes.

It's telling that the dramatic movement of the UFO at this point, swinging across the road, isn't mentioned in Betty's letter to Keyhoe days later. When unforgettable details only appear in later accounts, they tend to come across as embellishments. Maybe the light wasn't really moving and Barney was just unsteady on his feet and unable to lock on.
